Tengri has done a lot of prototyping and testing with the design of Ground Stations especially for single operators flying difficult missions.
In terms of selecting switches our key recommendation is avoid switches that require the use of your thumb except for the main control joystick. Knobs, gimbals, dials, and selector switches block your entire hand from being used for other controls while in use. Momentary, latching, and slider switches have the most amount of flexibility and allow multiple controls to be manipulated at the same time.
As an example for camera / gimbal control in a surveillance UAV try using three slider controls (for pan, tilt, and zoom) instead of a gimbal stick and use momentary switches to change gimbal / camera modes. This might give much better control of the camera / gimbal during a mission depending on your personal preferences.
